Program Description
Discover the authentic flavours and traditions of Sri Lanka on a unique excursion to the village of Kanneliya, where you'll learn about the production of traditional kithul syrup and the local drink known as toddy. This experience offers a fascinating insight into rural life and the island's culinary heritage.
After hotel pick-up, travel to Kanneliya, where you'll visit your local guide's property, home to a traditional kithul syrup production. You'll also stop at a historic toddy shop that has been operating for more than 40 years. Here, you'll learn how the sap collected from the flowers of the kithul palm is boiled to produce sweet syrup and then fermented to create the popular local drink known as toddy.
Depending on the season and time of day, you may also enjoy a guided walk through the nearby forest to see how kithul sap and jackfruit are harvested for use in traditional Sri Lankan cuisine.
The experience concludes with free time to relax by the local river or sample kithul syrup, toddy, and a regional dish prepared with jackfruit.
After the excursion, you will be transferred back to your hotel.
The itinerary and programme may be subject to change.
