Program Description

Is it a spaceship docked on the Bay of Biscay? No - it’s Centro Botín, one of the most distinctive cultural landmarks in Santander. Designed by world-renowned architect Renzo Piano, it immediately catches the eye with its unusual form. Inside, you’ll find works by masters of the 20th century alongside pieces by emerging artists.

The architecture alone makes Centro Botín hard to mistake for a traditional museum. Its modern structure stands out against Santander’s cityscape, while its location by the water gives the place a character of its own. Take a moment to admire the building from the outside - its design is just as intriguing as what awaits inside.

In the exhibition spaces, you’ll encounter 20th-century works of art alongside pieces by contemporary, emerging artists. Bringing established artists together with new voices offers a chance to see different approaches to art and how they have evolved over the decades.

There’s another highlight waiting outside. Centro Botín is located beside the historic Pereda Gardens, right on the Bay of Biscay. The views across the water and towards Spain’s northern coast provide a natural backdrop to the modern architecture, making the surroundings an important part of the experience.

At Centro Botín, art doesn’t end in the exhibition rooms. It can also be found in the architecture itself, in the surrounding space and in the view across the Bay of Biscay. This gives your visit a very different feel from that of a traditional museum.
