Program Description
For thousands of years, Delphi has inspired stories of gods, heroes and prophecies. On this day trip, you will explore one of the most important sites of ancient Greece, visit its renowned archaeological museum and finish your journey in the mountain village of Arachova on the slopes of Mount Parnassus.
Your journey begins with a scenic drive through the plains of Boeotia. Along the way, you will pass Thebes, a historic city linked to the legend of King Oedipus, before stopping near Levadia. As you continue towards Mount Parnassus, the landscape gradually changes from open plains to mountain scenery.
The main highlight of the day is Delphi, known in ancient Greek mythology as the ‘Centre of the World’. At the archaeological site, you will explore the remains of a sanctuary that played an important role in the religious and political life of ancient Greece. Among the landmarks you will see are the Treasury of the Athenians, the Athenian Stoa, the Polygonal Wall and the famous Temple of Apollo, home to the Oracle of Delphi, whose prophecies were once consulted by rulers and states. Your guide will share the stories behind the site, while skip-the-line access allows you to begin exploring without waiting in the regular queues.
Your visit continues at the Delphi Archaeological Museum, home to an exceptional collection of ancient Greek art and artefacts. Admire the Naxian Sphinx, the frieze of the Treasury of the Siphnians, the metopes of the Treasury of the Athenians and the celebrated Charioteer of Delphi, one of the finest surviving examples of ancient Greek bronze sculpture.
The final stop is Arachova, a mountain village set on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. Stroll through its cobbled streets and admire the traditional stone-built houses while taking in the surrounding mountain views. You will also have time to enjoy a meal at a local taverna and browse shops offering handmade textiles, local cheeses and other regional products.
The order of sightseeing and the programme may change.
