El Valle de Anton is a rural community built on the crater of an ancient inactive volcano. Due to its cool weather and calm environment at a reasonably distance from the capital city, it is a popular weekend destination among nature-loving nationals. Natural attractions near El Valle include the El Macho waterfall, a group of small thermal pools and a zoo called "El Nispero" which includes collections of anuran amphibians. The area around the city is also known to be one of the habitats of the Panamanian golden frog, endemic species in danger of extinction. Some of the forests around the city are protected areas. Visit La Piedra Pintada, precolumbian petroglyphs (plus a rock) have not been able to decode yet. Some villager’s say it has been a map of merchants, others say it is a map of caves connecting the surrounding mountains. The Valley is also known as the Dormida Indian place, named for the shape of a mountain, because it presents the shape of the figure of a woman lying on her back and some writers consider it a sanctuary for meditation.
